Prelude and Etude

I have been thinking about influences a lot lately and things that really shaped my musical thinking. These two solo piano pieces are written with old school harmony and piano technique, though they're not entirely nostalgic throwbacks. The Prelude, for example, puts a twist on the sort of pedal tones we know and love at the end of Bach's work for keyboard or organ by sustaining a single harmony for the second half of the piece, and doubling the melody in octaves to give the effect of organ registration. The Etude is, well, exactly that. In both pieces you can hear harmonic progressions from many well known piano composers --- a lot of Ravel, some Scriabin and Chopin, even a dash of Rachmaninoff.
